Illinois Neurontin® and Dangerous Drug Attorneys – Gary D. McCallister & Associates, LLC

In general, pharmaceutical lawsuits are brought because a drug caused harm to patients. However, in the case of Neurontin®, it is more than the adverse side effects that have caused damage. In 2004, drug maker Pfizer Inc. pled guilty to criminal charges and agreed to pay $430 million to settle claims for the illegal marketing of Neurontin®, which tried to promote the drug as a treatment for 11 conditions for which it was not Food and Drug Administration-approved. Because Neurontin® was not FDA-approved for treating those conditions, the safety and effectiveness of the drug are still in question. Those who have taken it are thus encouraged to talk to their doctors, they may be eligible to obtain damages from Pfizer Inc. For patients who live in Illinois and have taken Neurontin®, the dangerous drug attorneys of Gary D. McCallister & Associates, LLC may be able to help.

Neurontin® Information

Though it was approved only for the treatment of certain kinds of epilepsy and to relieve the burning nerve pain associated with shingles, recent lawsuits have shown that Neurontin® was prescribed 80 percent of the time for diseases for which approval was not obtained. Conditions for which it was prescribed include bipolar disorder, various pain disorders, Lou Gehrig's disease, attention deficit disorder, migraines, drug and alcohol withdrawal seizures, and anxiety. It has been shown that Pfizer Inc. actively marketed the drug for some of these conditions. In Illinois, patients prescribed Neurontin® can contact the dangerous drug attorneys at Gary D. McCallister & Associates, LLC  for more information on which conditions the drug is approved to treat.

Neurontin® mainly has side effects that are not severe, including sleepiness, dizziness, headache, and nausea. However, some patients have experienced more serious Neurontin® side effects, such as viral infections, memory loss, vomiting and diarrhea, and convulsions. Patients have also reported that the drug instigated suicidal tendencies, and younger patients have shown signs of severe emotional instability after taking the drug.
