Chicago, Illinois Remicade® Lawsuits – Dangerous Drug Lawyer Gary D. McCallister & Associates, LLC
Although most drugs available today undergo extensive testing before they are put on the market, some drugs that have unforeseen side effects are released to consumers. Remicade®, made by Centocor, Inc., is one of these drugs. Used to treat a variety of inflammatory conditions involving the immune system, Remicade® works by disabling a certain protein in the body’s immune system. Recently, though, Remicade® has been shown to produce harmful and potentially deadly side effects. Patients who live in Chicago, Illinois and have taken Remicade® may need a dangerous drug lawyer if they have suffered these adverse side effects. The lawyers at Gary D. McCallister & Associates, LLC have extensive experience in this complex type of litigation and can help victims and their loved ones gain compensation for their suffering
Remicade® Side Effects
The disorders that Remicade® was designed to treat, including rheumatoid arthritis, plaque psoriasis, Crohn’s disease, psoriatic arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and ankylosing spondylitis, are caused by the body’s immune system attacking healthy tissues. By inhibiting the action of a specific protein in the immune system, Remicade® can stop the damage that the immune system is causing. However, in some cases the drug may have an unintended adverse effect on the immune system, making the patient extremely susceptible to other serious diseases. Some of these diseases have greatly reduced patients’ quality of life and at times have proved fatal. Remicade® has also been shown to reactivate the hepatitis B virus in those who carry it, though the reason for this is not known. At our Chicago, Illinois firm, a dangerous drug lawyer can help you understand the way in which this drug works on your body and immune system and recommend appropriate action if you have a Remicade® case.
Remicade® can also increase a patient’s risk of developing many types of cancer. A study performed by the Mayo Clinic found that patients on the drug were three times more likely to develop cancer somewhere in their bodies, especially in the skin, breasts, and lungs. The study found the longer patients were on Remicade® and the higher the dosage, the more likely they were to develop cancer. Patients with a history of cancer and older patients were also more likely to develop the disease. Our practice encourages Illinois patients taking Remicade® to consult a lawyer and a health care professional to learn about their options.
This drug can also cause potentially fatal problems with the patient’s liver. Some patients have shown signs of extensive liver damage, even leading to liver failure, and have required liver transplants and emergency surgeries. Patients taking Remicade® who show signs of liver damage, including jaundice, fever, abdominal pain, and dark urine, are strongly encouraged to seek medical attention.
