Zelnorm®, a drug manufactured to treat the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, was recalled on March 30, 2007 after it was found to cause an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. In 2002, Zelnorm® was approved by the FDA to treat IBS in women under the age of 65. The FDA later approved the drug to treat IBS in men as well as patients older than 65 in 2004.
